La Atalaya del Camino. This is a really impressive value for money dark and brooding red wine from Almansa D.O, down in the southeastern depths of La Mancha. A mix of two dark and swarthy grapes – Monastrell and Garnacha Tintorera – this wine has spent 12 months in French oak barrels. The wine is so dark it can blot out the sun and the nose is incredibly aromatic: dark stewed fruits, wood, vanilla, shammy leather, overripe blackcurrants, cassis. The palate is creamy and unctuous and completely covers the palate. A powerful beast.
